About Me - It all started with Ruth
|
I have been interested in my family tree since my maternal grandmother, Ruth Mann Morris,
passed away in 1963 when I was 8 years old. As my mother reminisced about her mother, it hit
me that not only did I have grandparents. But my grandparents had parents and their parents
also had parents. I had become aware of the concept of generations and ancestors. I didn't
realize it at the time. But I was hooked!
Suddenly, history was no longer a boring subject! It was the actual experience lived by each of
my ancestors and they were part of me. The realization that my great grandmother wore long
skirts, had no air conditioning or television and couldn't vote like her husband did fascinated
me.
The hobby of genealogy faded in and out of favor at different times in my life. But I always
came back to it, filling in my family tree little by little from conversations with members of my
family, detailed research and dusty documents.
Now that I'm an adult, I find genealogy a great way to relax and take my mind off of a stressful
job. Whether I'm at home or on the road, I can always find some piece of the puzzle to work on.
Will I ever solve the complete puzzle? I really hope not. Because then the thrill of the search
would be gone. Just give me enough puzzle pieces along the way and I'm a 'happy camper.'
